Abstract
The purpose of this study is to provide evidence for effective suicide prevention policy for the elderly, by dividing the elderly with disability into two groups in order to identify factors affecting the suicidal thoughts of the older disabled. To carry out this objective, this paper uses the data from 7(2011)-13(2017) waves of the Korean Welfare Panel to estimate the regression model of disability, physical health factors, mental health factors, and related factors as independent variables, and suicide ideation as the result variables, and performed a Generalized Estimating Equation (GEE) regression analysis for longitudinal analysis of the terminating data. As a result of the analysis follows; First, the analysis showed that the disability with aging had a higher ratio of one-person households and unemployed people than the aging with disability, the monthly equivalence income was lower, and the range of increase in income was relatively small. Second, although the aging with disability were found to have higher health satisfaction and family conflicts than the aging with disability, and the number of outpatient treatments for the disability with aging were higher, mental health factors and relationship factors were similar in both groups. Third, factors affecting the suicidal ideation of the aging with disability were found to be significant among women, single-person households, depression, self-esteem, family satisfaction and family conflict. The effects of disability factors and physical health factors were found to be insignificant. Fourth, factors that affect suicidal ideation of disability with aging such as the number of outpatient treatments, depression, and self-esteem affect suicidal ideation. Based on the above findings, this study suggested policy and practical suggestions for preventing suicide of the elderly.
